Breaking the spell

The hardest conversation this programme teaches: reaching someone who does not yet believe there is a scam, and is still defending the person doing it. You learn to plant doubt without confrontation, so the insight is theirs.

This is the hardest thing this course teaches. Modules 1 and 2 taught you what fraud does to the mind, and how to communicate when fear, shame and stress are in the room. Module 3 applies both at the moment of maximum pressure: when the person does not yet believe there is a scam — the customer who defends the scammer, the parent who will not hear it, the client who hangs up on your warning.

And your goal in this module can be said in one word: awakening. You cannot wake someone by shaking them. This module teaches the quiet way in: helping a person see it from the inside, so that the insight is truly theirs.

People are generally better persuaded by the reasons which they have themselves discovered than by those which have come into the mind of others.

Blaise Pascal, Pensées (1670). Three hundred and fifty years old, and the exact principle of this module.

NOTE

In this module we usually say potential victim, not victim. Often money has already been lost, but further loss may still be preventable. In their own story, this person is not a victim at all. And the label you use silently shapes the words that come out loud.

Try it yourself · A warning call

First, feel the problem for yourself. This is Daniel. You briefly met him in Module 1. He is deep in a romance scam. “Elena” does not exist, but for Daniel she is the love of his life. Choose your answer, before any lesson, before any theory.

AUDIO — Daniel

“If this is about the transfers again. I know what I’m doing. Elena needs that money. Her situation is complicated. Please… don’t you start as well.”

Practice scenario

Scenario practice

What do you say to Daniel, right now?

NOTE

One honest note: in this module you will sometimes see what Daniel really thinks and feels inside. You can see it because we wrote it. In a real conversation you never get that window. That is exactly why you will learn to ask, and to wait.

What you will learn in this module

  • Why someone under a scammer’s influence cannot simply believe your warning, and what is happening in their head.
  • How the spell is built: trauma bonding, the two gates, and the voice the scammer planted before you called.
  • How to steady yourself first, and use your voice, your pace and even silence as tools.
  • How to change the route: from confrontation to working together.
  • How to ask mirror questions — questions that let someone discover the truth for themselves.
  • And how to stay connected over many conversations, because a spell breaks in cracks, not in one blow.

HOW THIS MODULE WORKS

Three weeks, split into short lessons you can pause and return to whenever you need. It is self-paced: there is no prize for rushing. This is the most skills-based module of the course. Practise out loud where you can. Your voice is the instrument here.

After every practice scenario you will find a short block called “What we learn from this”. That is the debrief, and it is where the real learning happens.

NOTE

This module looks closely at psychological manipulation, including the methods scammers use to bind and isolate a person. That is deliberate. It will also ask you to sit with frustration — the feeling of not being believed. Use the Mindful Moments. Your own steadiness is the core skill of this module.
